PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Axon Terminal, Hindsight Bias, Neurotransmitter
Document Summary
The study of mental processes and observable behavior psychology. Biological: physical hardware (brain and nervous system) determines thoughts and - behavior. Cognitive- mental processes (perception, memory, problem solving) impact behavior. Sociocultural- impact other people and our culture have on our thoughts and behavior. Case study- study of one individual in depth. Correlational studies- two variables measure to see if they"re related. Naturalistic- behavior being observed occurs in natural setting. Participant- researcher becomes part of group being observed. Sample: small group taken from a population to study. Population: the whole target group of individuals that are represented by the sample. A third unmeasurable variable is responsible for the relationship observed between the 2 measured variables. Random sampling- choosing participants randomly to participate in study. Random assignment- assigning participants to either control group or experiment group randomly. Double-blinding: when the observer or participants do not know whether they are in experimental or control group. (reduces bias)
