Fish are the most numerous pet in the u. s. It"s hard to keep fish healthy for extended times. i. e. city water changes, inclement weather, power outages, birds. The past 15 years have included big strides in fish medicine and surgery. Fish as pets: the not so good news. Otc medicines continue to frustrate the clinician. There have been lots of efforts to limit otc availability. Koi have been a catalyst for for advancing fish medicine and surgery. Quarantine is a very important part of preventative medicine. A 30 day quarantine is recommended for all new fish. A small aquarium and box filter can be used for this purpose. Most infectious diseases will appear within this 30 day window. Best to observe the fish in the home aquarium or pond.
