ANT 252 Lecture 1: Cultural Geography
Document Summary
They made me realize culture is just not people"s traditions or rituals but the way they live. That it is always changing and there are so many terms wrapped up within the word: yes we do. Average americans are always comparing themselves to other cultures. Throughout history cultures have looked down on others because they are different and we do not always understand their traditions. People rank their cultures by how modern/ technologically advanced they are or the way their homes are built. Sometimes it is enforced when people see how others live, or if they were raised a certain way such as not being so open minded. Globalization has increased dominance of popular culture over folk culture. Popular culture often destroys folk culture or preserves traditions as museum pieces or tourism gimmicks such as; mexican mariachis; polynesian. The way we protect folk culture is teach children. Use the oral tradition to go and sit amongst them and tell stories.
