Document Summary

Photosynthesis = light chemical energy to make sugars that are stored as starch. Co2 is absorbed into plants by carbon fixation. Water comes in through the roots and is transported by the xylem, which only runs from roots to shoots. Vascular tissue: xylem water flow only runs from roots to chutes. Lecture guide: phloem sugars and other materials travels throughout the plant. Oxygen is taken in through the roots. Carbon dioxide is released through the roots. Minerals are absorbed through the roots: k+ - used for transport, pest resistance, cold hardiness, no3, ca2, phosphorous atp, nucleic acid, fruiting, rooting, blooming. - used for chlorophyll, other pigments, proteins, nucleic acids, atp. Mycorrhizae (most are in the glomeromycota group) fungus that increases surface are of plants roots for water and mineral absorption. Casperian strip (pink strip): used to block unwanted materials from entering the cell/plant via the apoplastic route.
