COM 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Interpersonal Communication, Physical Attractiveness, Relational Dialectics
Document Summary
General theoretical approaches about: why we are forming relationships why we choose to stay in relationships (romantic, business, familial, etc. ) what we do in maintaining those relationships. We make choices about the relational bonds with others. Mere exposure effect - ability to see you. Mere exposure to a stimulus increases our liking of that stimulus. Works off the effects that we have no other exposure to that stimulus - no interaction otherwise. Ex. seeing a person everyday in the same place, but never interacting (we like that person more) Helps us to process in a less mindful way. Gives us the opportunity to know the other person, and for them to know us. Gives the ability to want to develop a relationship - mere exposure effect. We like people that are like us. When we are correct, makes us feel good about the world. Allows us to make predictions about what others would do.
