Spermatogenesis
o Seminiferous tubules: 700 ft of tubules
Sperm are in the innermost tubules
Held in lumen of seminiferous tubules: center fluid
Takes 9-11 weeks to make sperm
Acrosome: head of sperm that contains enzymes that allow sperm to penetrate zona
pellicuda
Electrical and chemical changes occur at egg penetration
Spermatogonium is diploid because it contains 46 chromosomes, 23 homologous pairs.
Primary Spermatocyte is diploid even though there is 92 chromatids, but still 46 different types
of chromosomes, and 23 tetras made up of homologous pairs
Secondary Spermatocyte is haploid even though there is 46 chromatids, but there is only 23
types of chromosomes
Spermatid has 23 chromosomes, all different
o
Oogenesis
o Ovum formation
750,000 eggs made even before birth, but it stalled prophase I
If egg is not fertilized, it will not go thru Phase II of meiosis
o The women only make 1 egg and 3 polar bodies per meiosis
