Smallpox: can affect palms and soles, scarring, blindness, eradicated, conditions, no animal reservoirs, can interrupt human to human transmission. Specific and sensitive tools for diagnosis and surveillance. Protected : uk:used cowpox and infected boy with it, and got one pox, but never got smallpox. Inoculation become vaccination: burden of disease, 1700s, 30% fatality. Scarring, disfigurement, 1/3rd of people blinded: 1959, 63 countries; 77k cases. Less than 1/100 cases reported: 50 mil new cases a year. Several cases tried to get rid of it: smallpox eradication program, 1700, presence of vaccine, 1920. Improved vaccine: 1950, vaccine didn"t need to be refrigerated. Little support, staff, budget, reporting: reliant on national campaign, 1964. Smallpox eradication unit in cdc: budget from who and cdc. Learn to accept culture of country and their rules and expectations. Strengthen reporting: new practices, biweekly reports that reported back to comm, trained community leaders to help with vaccination.
