Document Summary

Deviance: behavior that is recognized as violating expected rules and norms. More than nonconformity (we all break the rules ). Behavior that departs significantly from social expectations is deviant. Established rules and norms are socially created, not just morally decided or individually imposed. But deviance also lies in the social responses to behavior and the people engaged in the behavior. Formal deviance: behavior that breaks laws or official rules. (e. g. , crime) Informal deviance: behavior that violates customary norms. (behavior judged by those who uphold society"s norms). Behavior that is deviant in one context or circumstance may be normal in another. Drinking martinis in a bar = acceptable behavior. Drinking wine in a brown paper bag on a street corner = deviant. A behavior may be ruled deviant only when performed by certain people. Women who wear nail polish and make-up = normal. Men who wear nail polish and make-up = deviant.
