TT 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Bast Fibre, Sorption, Selective Breeding
Document Summary
Fibers are called by chemical names, trade names, and generic names (controlled by the federal trade commission) Manufactured fibers: converted into fibers in industrial processes. Synthetic polymers and materials: organic polymers and inorganic polymers. Flax is a bast fiber fiber from the stem of the flax plant. Manufactured fibers are produced primarily by large companies. Manufacturers often modify fibers from the same generic group to produce fibers with performance characteristics for specific end uses. Fibers engineered for specific end uses are trademarked and marketed by the trademark or brand. The fiber manufacturers advertise and promote the trademark or brand, and charge a licensing fee for the use of the trademark or brand from their customers. Brand quality is controlled by the fiber producer through licensing agreements, as any product sold by the brand or trade name has to meet minimum performance specifications set by the fiber company. Ex: strength or tenacity (dry & wet) and elongation at break.
