ARHI 30120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Mycenaean Greece, Lion Gate, Knossos
Document Summary
Tipped on a diagonal - shows change and motion and shows that it is floating, not anchored down. Gathering itself for a push - all of the tentacles are raised. It"s purpose is to hold liquid, but it seems like it is permeable, like it is going to break the wall between the inside and the outside. Does not have the appearance of containing. Symmetrical - vertically, there is literally a dotted line down the middle of the vase. Due to symmetry it is more balanced and there is a sense of rest. It also appears to be stationary, not in motion. The tentacles add to this by waving horizontally. Thesis: the decorations and the pot are related for the mycenaeans. The tentacles are wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, matching the pot and showing its three dimensionality.
