Document Summary

We need to look at it, because we will be studying monumental art and architecture in this course. From this, we see that proportion, scale, and ratio are key to monumentality. Example: if i had a milk jug that was 5 feet high, that would be something out of the ordinary. We grasp the (cid:1445)qualities(cid:1446) of it, the shape. Looking at these examples of monumental art and architecture, we can look at the events that mark the construction or craftsmanship of these works and find that they are all characterized by the crossing of some boundary. E. g. graves mark the crossing of the boundary between life and death. Also such things as rituals and processions mark the crossing of boundaries, for example between childhood and adulthood, single life and marriage, life and death, etc. Formal analysis means deducing things about art by seeing the way it looks.
