Document Summary
Minoans - look at how they influence mycenaeans. Purpose of monumental art and architecture (answer design question) Monumental characteristics of mycenaean art and architecture approach, confrontation, preparation of attitude, lifting things out of context, transformation of theme of scale, manipulation of space. Problem of the dark ages: no monumental art or architecture for 300 years. It is not until 575 b. c. that we get columns that look like the mycenaean columns and pediments that look like mycenaean relieving triangles. We are going to establish that there is continuity of art and architecture as well as culture. The greek language: athens keeps the ionian dialect. Evidence that the mycenaeans knew what was coming: the secret spring. Deep underground, very costly to dig and build. There were other easily accessible water sources outside of the city. Must have been due to some outside threat on the city.
