ARHI 30120 Lecture 15: 10/12/17 - Monumental Greek Doric Temples
Document Summary
Hierarchy is established by the middle of the 7th century (emblematic scene is primary, narrative scene is secondary polyphemus vase) In 620 b. c. , the orientalizing period ends and the archaic period begins - new pottery. Scene of gorgons with perseus shown again - gorgons have changed, they are bearded and winged with their tongues sticking out. Black figure is characteristic of corinth, now borrowed by the athenians. Outline drawing was formerly characteristic of the athenians. In profile - makes it possible for figures to interact with each other. There is a centaur, there are names beside the figures (heracles and nessos) Heracles is written backwards (boustrophedon (cid:1445)as the ox turns(cid:1446)) Nessos has his hands out stretched, begging for mercy. Pediments have nothing to do with the divinity being worshipped. They are directly associated to divinity, but in a different way. It is the 1st fully stone doric temple with all of the expected elements.
