Document Summary

Effects of microorganisms on hosts: stages: Infection: multiplication of microbes in or on (may or may not cause disease) Pathogenicity and virulence: pathogencity= capability to produce disease. Low rarely cause disease (or disease is mild) Pathogen= parasite: virulence= intensity of the disease caused by a pathogen. Often used for vaccines (mumps, measles, influenza) Virulence factors: give microbes advantage to infect cells, adherence/invasive factors. Capsules (avoid phagocytosis- part of immune system: toxins. Endotoxins poison contained within bacteria (ex. gram neg. Passage through birth canal, contact with instruments/feeding materials, during nursing, by contact with other people. Want baby to be exposed to normal, good microorganisms. Body parts that are normally microbe-free: should not have organisms in them, tissues and organs. Middle and inner ear, bone marrow, muscles, ovaries and testes: body fluids sterile. Blood, saliva in glands, urine in kidneys. Transient microflora and opportunists: see pg. 9 for full list: transient= not usually there, (cid:498)just passing through(cid:499)
