Most dogs (u. s. ) now immune need to be vaccinated, unlikely to get rabies from domesticated dog/cat in us. Hydrophobia= fear of swallowing (neurological problem) causes foaming at the mouth. Replicates at site of bite, spreads to cns. Endemic in us human infection pretty rare but almost always ends in death once symptoms show. Vaccine: can be given after exposure (up to 10 days after bite: used to be 14 injections in abdomen, now 5 im injections in 1 month, 2 types: one passive, one active: Rabies immune globulin: purified anti-rabies antibodies (passive) given at wound site. Rabies vaccine (active) inactivated virus (same as pasteur"s(cid:524) 1 million worldwide and 20,000 americans receive post- exposure prophylaxis (vaccine) Bite by wild carnivore: regard animal as rabid, test animal for rabies, begin treatment of human immediately. Unprovoked bite by domestic animal: if not suspected to have rabies, wait to see if symptoms in animal shows. Bite by wild rodent, squirrel, rabbit, etc.
