Brain sends a message to the sympathetic nervous system, which produces the flight-or-flight response. Cognitive: includes thoughts of being hurt, contamination, self-critical thoughts, fear of injury attentiveness to danger, but when they cannot find a source of danger, they turn it on themselves. Leads to subjective feelings of apprehension, nervousness, difficulty in concentrating, and panic. Behavioral: includes avoidance, shaking, twitching, clenched jaw, avoidance of eye contact escape/ avoidance. If the child continues to avoid the situations that cause anxiety, then he or she will just struggle more: the balance of symptoms across categories is culturally influenced. Western backgrounds= show more cognitive anxiety other cultures express more physical/ behavioral anxiety.
