Psychopathology: cultural prevalence rates, 48% of americans will experience mental illness, culturally, there are different manifestations of the disorder. Can be either mental or physiological: anxiety disorders, normal anxiety: both physiological and psychological response to stress. Stress in the environmental, yet the anxious environment is not present. Researchers can"t explain the manifestation of recurring episodes that happen without the precipitating event: 20% of the us population will have an anxiety disorder in their lifetime, categories of anxiety disorders, anxiety disorders, generalized anxiety disorder (gad) Chronic, excessive generalized anxiety without a precipitating cause. Combined with: restlessness, fatigue, concentration problems, change in sleeping/eating patterns, tension, irritability. Causal components: biological (heredity) and psychological (stress- look out) Gender differences: women are 2 times more likely to experience anxiety disorders than men: obsessive-compulsive disorders, characterized by obsessions and compulsion. Obsession: unwanted, inappropriate, persistent and intrusive thoughts that cause anxiety. Compulsion: repetitive realistic behaviors to fend off the thoughts, to get rid of the anxiety.
