Anxiety disorders & differential diagnosis: separation anxiety disorder: Characterized by excessive worry regarding separation from home or parents anxiety persists for at least 4 weeks and is severe enough to interfere with normal routines. Developmentally inappropriate, disabling and excessive distress related to separation from attachment figure (primarily parents) Most children have specific fears that come and go. These children frequently display excessive demands for parental attention by clinging to their parents and shadowing their every move. Fear new situations and attempt to avoid separation at all costs (fuss, cry, scream) Many physical symptoms may be associated with anxiety levels (rapid heartbeat, dizziness, headaches) 4-10% of children more prevalent in girls. One of the two most common anxiety disorders to occur during childhood other= specific phobia. Earliest reported age onset and youngest age at referral around. Associated problems= school refusal, panic however, these kids tend to do fine socially.
