Darwin had no way of knowing the mechanism of where all these organisms came from. The process of speciation is difficult because it is extremely difficult to get good evidence for the mechanism of how it occurred. Need to determine what genes are involved and then isolate them. Difficult to determine which genes contribute to speciation. ~ 1. 8 million species have been described, organisms have been given scientific names. Different species of wolf: the timber wolf, the grey wolf, coyote, the red wolf (canis rufus) Proposal to include the red wolf under the endangered species act.
