Document Summary

Determine the type of each song: ballad (and specific type of ballad), folk song, spiritual, gospel, work song, etc. Also be able to describe the singing style. Songs for the test on folk music: john hardy, po lazarus, joshua fit the battle of jericho. Songs for the midterm: good night irene, this land is your land, blowin" in the wind. Note the similarity of the melodies in each version. The third and fourth versions of the song contain similar lyrics. This song features a solo singer who is answered after every line she sings by a chorus singing nonsense words. This is a similar to verse and refrain form except the refrains occur after each line the woman sings instead of after a complete verse. This song is sung by trained singers and contains a refrain. Be able to list at least two different instruments you hear in the song.
