Document Summary

Goal: to teach a pigeon to peck a disc. A need or desire that energizes behaviour and directs it towards a goal. A desire to perform a behaviour to receive promised rewards or avoid threatened punishment. A desire to perform a behaviour effectively for its own sake. Innate, biologically determined behavior with a fixed pattern. Our natural instincts to motivate our behaviour. A physiological need creates a drive (aroused state) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need. Need (food, water) -> drive (hunger, thirst) -> drive- Goal is to return body to homeostasis, or a steady-internal state. Some behavior is driven by a need to increase or decrease physiological arousal levels. Curiosity provides stimulation to reach optimum arousal level. Those who enjoy high arousal and need more arousal than others. Humans satisfy basic needs, then find motivation to pursue goals higher on the hierarchy.
