PSYC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Cardiovascular Disease, Basal Metabolic Rate
Document Summary
Be able to describe and apply the yerkes-dodson law. Be able to give an example of drive reduction theory. There is a complex relationship among the stomach, hormones, and different parts of the brain. The body is constantly monitoring the glucose. Glucose -> blood sugar that is a major source of energy. Low glucose will cause your body to stimulate your brain to motivate eating. Receptors in the digestive system monitor levels of glucose and send signals to the hypothalamus in the brain. The cycle: hormones travel from organs to the brain to convey messages to increase or decrease appetite. Can change with age or cultural conditions. The body"s resting rate of energy expenditure. Body adjusts hunger and energy use to maintain set point. Can constantly release hormones to tell the body to eat -> No release the hunger hormone -> no appetite. Preferences for sweet and salty are genetic / universal.
