Chapter twenty-one: municipal solid waste: disposal and recovery. Municipal solid waste (msw): is the total of all the materials thrown away from homes and smaller commercial establishments. Collected by local governments and regulated by epa. (separate from hazardous waste and industrial waste) Until the 1960s, most msw was burned no longer is acceptable because of air pollution laws now it taken to landfills. Msw has grown steadily in the united states, in 1960 2. 7 pounds per person/day and in 2007 4. 6 pound per person/day. Increasing population, increasing purchasing and wasteful packaging but we recycle more and more. Waste is put on or in the ground and covered with earth. Because there is no burning and the waste is covered with earth, air pollution and vermin are kept down. Unfortunately, at first no other factors were given consideration, creating problems with groundwater contamination. Site on high ground, well above water table.
