Behavior not primarily motivated by sexual urges. Generally not as pessimistic as freud about human nature and society. Personality is not primarily determined by childhood experiences but develops thru the lifespan. Hero, powerful father, nurturing mother, witch, wise old man, innocent child, birth and death. Neurosis is an attempt to make life bearable, a method of interpersonal control and coping . The self is the core of your being, your potential. If healthy, you have an accurate conception of who you are, and you would then be free to realize that potential (self-realization) Personality develops to gain control of world and overcome feelings of infantile helplessness. Personality is shaped by need to meet social needs. Strategies used to solve crises determines personality. Differ with regard to how much of a trait they possess. A person"s personality shouldn"t shift due to certain situations. Focus on uniqueness made it difficult to draw general conclusions about personality.
