The brain"s ability to create new synapses and strengthen existing synaptic connections: enables learning and the formation of new memories, enables healthy neurons to take over the functions of damaged neurons. The formation of new neurons: neural stem cells. Rats in enriched versus deprived environments have both more connections and new neuron growth (especially in hippocampus) A slower messenger system that regulates metabolism, growth, and sexual behavior: neurons act across the synapse (20 nanometers, hormones may travel the entire circulatory system before they bind to target cells. Glands- send signals by secreting chemicals into the bloodstream: can affect large areas of the body.
