Operational definition- statements that define variables by describing the exact method used to measure or manipulate those variables (e. g. , aggressive acts will be defined as any time a hit occurs during recess) One subject tested under different conditions; same subject is in the control and experimental condition. Experimental group- the group that receives the treatment: exposure to violent tv, a drink with my new drug in it. Control group (s)- the group that receives no treatment, or some other treatment: no tv, tv showing children playing, a drink with no drug in it. Random sampling- ensures that everyone in the population has an equal chance at being in the experiment. Random assignment- spreads uncontrolled subject variables evenly between groups. Are equal to a sugar pill in alleviating mild to moderate depression (kirsh, et al. , Experimenter bias- unintentional effects the researcher can have on their own results.
