How monuments and memorials got started and how they evolved in the 20th century. Sculptures: much more literal - usually about an individual person. Contemporary: in the last 75 years (post wars) Boston holocuase memorial - built 30 years ago. Took a long time for them to build it. Germany more than any other country has reflected on its bad actions and changed its culture to never repeat the same mistakes. The memorial was done by an american architect. Washington dc is the perfect map of the us goverments plan of checks and balances. How do we engge with memory, we expect experience to memorialize, we don"t just want to look. By being at the memorial, you have a part in this. Descending onto the trench, or quagmire, or morass. Try to put yourself in the shoes of all different kinds of people who will visit the memorial. What these visitors are looking for in their experience.
