Document Summary

11/7/13: synaptic transmission, neurotransmitters are diverse in their action some are excitatory some are inhibitory some open ligand gated ion channels directly and some open via second messenger system some effect depends on the receptor on the postsynaptic cell some use second messenger systems, three kinds of synapses with different modes of action excitatory cholinergic synapse inhibitory gaba ergic synapse excitatory adrenergic synapse, excitatory cholinergic synapse, cholinergic synapse: acetylcholine (ach) is neurotransmitter. Na+ has a greater electrochemical force inward due to attraction of the negative inside of the cell as na+ enters the cell it spreads out along the inside of the plasma membrane and depolarizes it producing a local potential called the postsynaptic potential if strong and persistent enough, postsynaptic potential travels to and opens voltage gated ion gates in the trigger zone causing the postsynaptic neuron to generate an action potential.
