Document Summary

Wavelength and frequency are inversely related: v=c. All color with a few dark lines: bunsen and kirchhoff. When different elements are burned on a bunsen burner, different colors show in the fire. They used a spectroscope to put that light through a p(cid:396)is(cid:373), ea(cid:272)h ele(cid:373)e(cid:374)t"s light had a u(cid:374)i(cid:395)ue spe(cid:272)t(cid:396)u(cid:373) (all dark with a few lines of color) Atomic emission spectra: characteristic patterns of bright lines produced when atoms are vaporized in high-temp. flames or electrical discharges. Atomic absorption spectra: characteristic absorption of dark lines produced when an external source of ration passes through free gaseous atoms. For any give element, dark lines in absorption spectrum are at same wavelength as bright lines in emission spectrum. Particles of light: quantam theory: blackbody radiators: when cold, their surfaces are jet black and absorb all light, become perfect radiators of light when hot. At higher temps, they emit radiation at shorter wavelengths.
