Objective The objective of this experiment is to separate cyclohexane and toluene from a liquid
mixture using simple and fractional distillation.
Eight milliliters of a 50/50 mixture of cyclohexane and toluene was added to a 10mL
round bottom flask with a boiling chip. The mixture was distilled using the Hickman Distillation
head and simple distillation. The flask was heated in the sand bath until distillate started to form
in the Hickman. The distillate was removed and the volume and temperature recorded. This
was repeated until there was about 1mL of the mixture left in the flask.
The first volumes recorded for the first two distillate readings were larger than any of the
others. This is probably because the mixture was heated very quickly and distillate formed
faster than expected; therefore, distillate was
