Objective The goal of the Diels-alder experiment is to synthesize cis-norbornene-5, 6-end-
dicarboylic anhydride from maleic anhydride and cylcopentadiene.
The first step in this experiment is to place .2g of maleic anhydride and 1.0mL of ethyl acetate to
a test tube. Then one milligram of ligroin is added. Next, .2mL of dry cyclopentadiene was
added. The tube was allowed to cool to room temperature, and crystals formed during this time.
The solvent was removed by vacuum filtration. The crystals were weighed and yield was
calculated. The melting point of the final product was determined.
