Lecture 5 outline (cid:1) quantisation of energies of electrons (chemistry3 3. 4, 3. 5) (cid:1) energy levels and orbitals (chemistry3 3. 5, 3. 6) (cid:1) electronic configuration (chemistry3 3. 6) When atoms collide, it is their electron clouds which interact. Thus, the chemistry of the elements is determined by the arrangement of electrons in their atoms their electronic structure. (cid:1) protons give atoms their identity, but electrons give them their personality . The following is a greatly simplified model of how electrons are arranged. At the atomic scale, quantum theory shows that the behaviour of particles is very strange. The shells are designated 1, 2, 3, etc. The shells contain subshells, which have slightly different energies from each other (in all atoms except hydrogen). Electrons in a given subshell all have identical energies. (cid:1) the 1st shell has 1 subshell, the 2nd has 2 subshells, the 3rd has 3, etc.
