36 views2 pages

Document Summary

How are we affected by media images of crime and justice: either news or popular. Direct effects: we see crime > we do it, we have more violence in tv now and less violence in real life. Maybe in response to the real danger posed by crime: break in reality around 2002/2004 when the belief increases but threat decreases. The media: most people report that the media is their primary source of info about crime. If this is true, people who watch more crime media should be more afraid: not always true research reveals only a modest relationship between media consumption and fear of crime- no real effects. Variability: some types of crime content may be more fear-inducing, some audience members may be more susceptible, people who live in different types of areas may be more susceptible. What types of crime content may be more fear-inducing: violence, realism, just resolution, proximity. The reading discussed research considering all of these factors.
