2 big connections: the role of culture and style in crime, when cultural objects (art, music) are accused of being criminogenic or are criminalized. They think these are related and should be considered together. But many are collective behavior; many occur within deviant or criminal subcultures. Ex. bikers, hippies, gangs, punks, ragers/ravers, hipsters. Ex. the persecution of being gay: boundaries are strengthened when criminalized. Criminal in and of itself or criminogenic: encouraging crime. If the subculture threatens the status quo. Useful for pointing ngers and also to sell product on basis of controversy- kind of both bene ting. Punk in 1970"s: especially in britain, especially the sex pistols. Ned the head of record company, rules promo obscene . Rap in 1990"s: especially gangster rap. 2 live crew, nwa, body count cop killer . Also; art: art vs. child pornography, homophobic reactions to art, contradictions!
