Chapter 14: renewable energy: renewable energy does not need fuel, or the fuel is plant based so it replenishes itself on a time scale such that it will not run out. There is plenty of the energy around, but it is diffused, so it takes a lot more work to harness the amount of energy produced by fossil fuels. The issue is not with amount, but with power and energy density: biomass (4. 8% of us energy): This is a mix of burning wood and wood products, and advanced fuels created from biological material. Waste wood from lumber and paper operations is burnt at power plants instead of or along with coal. Biofuels convert plant matter into a liquid fuel. Corn or sugar cane can be transformed into ethanol and mixed with gasoline. Oils can be converted into something similar to diesel.
