Thomas edison invents the motion picture camera and viewing machine (1894). The vitascope projector (1896) permitted people to view film simultaneously not there"s a projector and you don"t have to look through the little lens. With rival machines, there was no industry standardization. The first decade of the 1900s saw the growth of stories, feature films, and nickelodeons (movie theater black and white, no sound). Early inventors of devices tried to limit entry by exploiting patents. Early industry participants: equipment manufacturers, film producers, film distributors, and nickelodeons. The motion picture patents company formed and tried to vertically integrate the industry tried to control production, distribution and exhibition tried to buy up the means of production to lock up all the profits. Antitrust litigation led to disbanding of the motion picture trust in 1918 (gov fights back. Film exhibitors retaliated by going into film production they make their own movies!
