Edison (remember him?) invented and patented the first talking machine. Subsequent patents were issued to victor talking machine (victrola), which introduced (cylindrical) disk recordings. By 1909, three companies with their own patent monopolies dominated the market: Recordings originally were an incentive to buy machines; eventually, interest in the recordings themselves dominated. By 1950, rca victor, columbia and decca were the dominant record companies. Beginning with the 1930s, radio became a medium to place recordings before the public. Shift toward contemporary popular music on radio. Top 40 programming began in the 1950s. Payola scandals of the 1950s and 60s. Growth of fm radio (higher quality broadcast) in the 1960s. Now, almost all stations work from a playlist. Now, there are more quality and options: digital fm and internet and satellite radio, music streams over the internet, youtube broadcasts. First the cylinder, then 78, then 45, then 33 1/3 rpm (lp) vinyl records (which are making a comeback)
