 27 Jan 14 – South Asia in Global Context   (aka wow the Brits fucked shit up)  ­ Bollywood o Based in Mumbai o $1.3B in 2010 (vs. Hollywood $50B) o 3.6B tickets sold in 2010 (vs. Hollywood 2.6B) o Escapism, vibrant, etc ­ Argument: Like other regions, SA – esp India & Pakistan – deeply shaped by  decolonization, CW, & glob after 1945 o India & Pakistan demonstrate quite diff responses to each, even tho they  are neighbors & were once ruled by the Brits as part of unified territory ­ Decolonization in India & Pakistan o I & P became independent almost simultaneously (Aug 14 &15)  Kashmir region disputed b/c important passes w Russia o Partition of India  Muslims & Hindus began moving toward ‘their’ states in summer  ‘47 • Even day before partition, many didn’t know where the  boarders would be  10­14M people on move – largest episode of uprooting people in  modern history  More than 1M killed in communal violence, often by neighbors  (on trains, in villages, on the road). Every v every community  Travel by trains, walked, often took only what they could carry.  o After Partition  I & P went down 2 v diff paths, even tho they influenced one  another a great deal  Fought 3 wars: 1948, ’65 (both over Kashmir), & ’71 (over  secession of E Pakistan) • Kashmir actually 60% Muslim, Pakistan had greater claim  if partition based on religion • India supported E Pakistan’s separation from W Pakistan (E  Pakistan  ▯Bangladesh)  ­ Interlude o A brief narrative history of P & I since partition o Pakistan  New state divided by 3,000mi between E & W, dominated by W  Pop 2947: 31M (today 176M)  After Jinnah’s death in ’48 P cha
