Act secured for limited times exclusive rights to writings and discoveries. Current copyright act enacted in congress in 1976 and effective 1/1/78. The us became party to the universal copyright convention in 1955. In 1989 became a party to the berne convention. Treaty that standardizes basic copyright protection among signatory countries (roughly 100 at this time).
