MUST 1220 Lecture 26: Intro to Music Technology MIDI
Document Summary
Channel messages (pertaining to information on a particular channel: voice, mode. System messages (pertaining to the system as a whole: real-time, common, system exclusive (sysex) Midi instructions are transmitted in form of binary numbers. The binary numbers are transmitted by pulse code modulation (pcm) = the alteration of voltage between high and low levels. A 1 indicates the high level; a 0 indicates low level. The 1st and last bits are start and stop bits = used to identity the beginnings and ends of words. Therefore, the actual midi info is only stored in the middle 8 bits. Channel voice messages correspond to musical notation, and are transmitted with 2 types of bytes: Status bytes determines the type of message and channel number (what & where?) The status byte is divided into nibbles. Data bytes gives a value (how much?) Note off (2 data bytes: note number each chromatic pitch is assigned a note number.
