Session 2: The Bonn Years • German enlightenment and literature • Young Beethoven (Ludwig van Beethoven) o Left Bonn in 1792 for Vienna •  Family  o Ludwig van Beethoven (grandfather)  Lead court musicians  Wife was alcoholic  o Johann van Beethoven (father)  Troubled career as a court singer and violinist o Maria Magdalena Keverich Leym (mother)  Had 7 children; 3 survived to adulthood; young Beethoven was the  middle child •  Music History  o Johann Sebastian Bach (late 18  century)  During Bach’s time, many people didn’t really know him and his  music seemed arcane and difficult to average musicians  His music was little known and hard to find  Only from 1800, did Bach’s music start to appear  Son was Carl Philipp Emanuel (elector of Bonn)  Believed in freedom and human rights but because he was on the  verge of his career, he also accepted the role of aristocracy since  his music was dependent on the public. He did maintain his faith  for individual human rights o Counterpoint o Fugue o The well­tempered clavier by Bach  Neefe introduces the music of Bach to Beethoven and praises  Beethoven for playing this piece so well  Showed how Beethoven had a great command of musical logic and  depth of expression o Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (a singspiel)  Influenced Beethoven o Wunderkind  The word to describe Mozart (how brilliant he was) o Christian Gottlob Neefe (his influence musically and intellectually)  Became young Beethoven’s principal teacher  Composed and produced operas, especially Sinspiele in the 1770’s  Had rigorous standards and apparent generosity  Devoted teacher and a stern critic of current musical trends  Played a part in young Beethoven’s intellectual growth by  engaging with literature and intellectual affairs  Member of Illuminati
