Document Summary

This show gave people in afghanistan their first experience with democracy. There was a concern for contestant"s safety. One woman danced on stage, took off her veil, received death threats. Exercising her agency - her individual power, her thoughts, her actions. Fans of the show/women didn"t wear veils, as a reaction of her actions. She set a precedent and made progression in women"s rights even though she got kicked off. Other woman was more conservative, but still did not make it to the finale, because of sexism. She"s currently (or at the movie"s end at least) under government protection because although she didn"t do anything scandalous like the other woman, she lives closest to the taliban who were not happy with the show and women participating. Out of the thousands who auditioned for this show, only 4 women auditioned. Two made it to the final four, which is progression.
