Types of Democracy
● Aggregative Democracy: politics of instrumental reason, private interests, competitive
elections, and institutional(ized) power. The public determines what should be done,
and the political leadership simply implements its decisions. Privileges populist
sentiment; desires and values taken to be unwavering.
● Deliberative Democracy: involves citizens in public discourse about political issues, a
process that ideally enlarges their perspectives and produces consensual decisions.
Privileges rational verbal discourse to reach consensus.
● Agonistic Democracy: politics of becoming. Conflict is a part of the democratic process
and even notions of democracy are up for debate. Celebrates “dissonant conjunctions”,
e.g. separation/connection; identity/difference.

article that you find particularly compelling or provocative.
● Try to put Love’s ideas in your own words.

● Are you convinced by Love’s argument? Why or Why not?
