Gastric decompression: use and care of nasogastric tubes. Lab skills: inserting a nasogastric tube, removing a nasogastric tube, irrigating a nasogastric tube connected to suction, practice abdominal physical assessment using the lab guide provided, practice obtaining an abdominal assessment health history. Tubes for decompression: nasogastric tubes (ng) (single lumen) (can do intermittent, lower pressure suction because there is not air pigtail on the single lumen) Tuesday, october 3, 2017: levine (single lumen, salem sump (double lumen) for continuous suction. Purpose of pigtail (allows air to go in for an anti-re ux effect) Enterostomal tubes: long term feedings: gastrostomy tube (gt) Surgically inserted into stomach from abdominal wall. Use 2-3 days after insertion: percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (peg) if you have bad re ux you would want a j tube instead. Insertion does not require general anesthesia (just sedation in an outpatient setting) Use within hours of insertion (basically can be used right away)
