Countries switched to a national language instead of latin. General test of national often came down to religion. Migration developed a strong feeling of homesickness. Genuinely based on the masses, strong carrier of tradition - the church. Lawyer, charismatic leader, awoke the political consciousness of people. Wanted a moderate middle-class irish autonomy by agreement or negotiation with the british whigs. Gives little evidence of growing nationalism outside of europe.
