Statistics: method for dealing with data; actual numbers or measurements collected through observations (i. e. height of everyone in class, listing of gender of everyone in class) Data: a value that summarizes or characterizes some aspect of a set of data (i. e. average time it took you to get to class; proportion of males/females in class) Descriptive: organizing and summarizing data, present in useable/meaningful form, interpret patterns in data, many techniques to organize and summarize. Discrete: consists of separate, distinct, finite categories, isolated numbers w/ gaps, no values can exist between categories, i. e. # of cars owned, observing patients classified into panic disorders, eating disorders, and psychotic disorders. We know jerry makes more money but don"t know how much more money i. e. teams make playoffs if they finish 1st regardless of how many games ahead they are. Different distributions for different data: frequency distributions, relative frequency distributions.
