Document Summary

Weapons as aggression-eliciting stimulus by leonard berkowitz and anthony lepage. Berkowitz and lepage set out to test the hypothesis that stimuli associated with aggression can elicit aggressive responses from people ready to act aggressively. 100 male university students received 1 or 7 shocks, supposedly from a peer, and were allowed to shock back. The experimenter told participants to ignore the items on the table, but apparently they could not. The greatest number of shocks was given by individuals who received 7 shocks and were in the presence of weapons. Participants who saw the guns were more aggressive than were participants who saw the sports items. Occasionally observed increases in aggressive behavior after presentation of aggressive cues are interpreted. Any object or external characteristic that is associated with aggression can serve as an aggression-enhancing situational cue.
