If you"re twice as likely to hit a 2 pointer compared to a 3 pointer, you"ll go for 2 pointers twice as often. Presented with an fr2 and fr10 schedule, most will only respond to fr2. When reinforcement is fixed and predictable, animals will act to maximize reinforcement by only participating in the more favorable schedule. Perhaps because a pigeon will generally use vision, not hearing, to identify food sources. In contrast, hearing is important for spotting predators, which might explain it"s ready association with pain. Behavior systems approach: an alternative view, inspired by garcia"s research, is that learning fine tunes and modifies existing instinctive behavioral systems, on this view, animals are not seen as blank slates". In the absence of prey, but with food signalled, the animal activates a focal search mode: the animal then investigates the cage, and finds the unfamiliar bar.
