We said before that taste would be the sense most associated with nausea in the real world, because it"s with our sense of taste that we get the most information about what"s in the food that we"re eating. So it makes sense that you"d develop biological associations between flavors and learning about nausea. But a quail"s diet is a bit different. A quail eats seeds, which are of course coated in a hard shell, and typically he swallows them whole. Maybe if a seed goes bad, flavor isn"t a very good indicator. But maybe there are visual signals that tell you when a seed is starting to turn. Unusual features: the most remarkable thing about conditioned taste aversion is the very long delay between cs and ucs. But behaviorists felt that this feature was explainable, and in fact was explainable in part through the point about modality specificity.
