Delivery of medication through skin via low voltage dc. Depth: 6-20 mm: cortisone injection better if need deeper. Worse burn, watch skin after: anode pos charge. Driving force of medication: resistance of tissues. Decrease by (1) warming up (2) cleaning off: strength of current. Bone is bad conductor: pain and skin issues are the biggest issues. Hydration status of skin will significantly influence the medication delivery through the skin: decrease h20 at neg electrode will increase skin ph can cause chemical irritation of skin, higher intensity has shown to increase ph/irritation. Warmer skin temp decreased resistance to medication. Same precautions/contraindication as estim: full dose: 40 ma/min dose, dose for comfort: 0. 5-1. 0 ma/cm2, time depends on electrical dose tolerated. If can crank up machine time will be shorter. Use of anesthetic to crank up machine more. Contraindication: same as estim but also medication issue.
